After the team’s 2023 schedule was released on Tuesday, the San Jose Earthquakes will start their next chapter in Atlanta in late February under new head coach Luchi Gonzalez.
The Quakes will make their debut on February 25 at Atlanta United before making their home debut against the Vancouver Whitecaps on March 4. That evening, San Jose will play host to a 20-year reunion of the 2003 MLS Cup winning team.
The first home game at a location bigger than PayPal Park will be the California Clasico versus the LA Galaxy on July 1 at Stanford Stadium. On May 6, the Earthquakes will play host to MLS Cup winner Los Angeles FC at Levi’s Stadium for what the group is referring to as the Bay Area’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration.
At PayPal Park on August 30, San Jose will hosts a second game versus the Galaxy.
Another change to the schedule will occur in July when all 47 MLS and Liga MX teams will compete in the Leagues Cup, a new CONCACAF tournament with group stages and knockout rounds.
With just 34 points, the Earthquakes finished last in the Western Conference in 2022. Coach Matias Almeyda was fired in April after San Jose collected just three points during its first seven games and was the final team standing without a victory. Alex Covelo, the manager of Earthquakes II, was promoted to interim coach for the rest of the campaign.
Gonzalez was named to the position in August, but he first completed his duties as an assistant on the team for the World Cup.
The way that viewers will watch the 2023 MLS season will also change: As a result of the league’s 10-year agreement with Apple TV, the Quakes’ games will no again be shown on NBC Sports Bay Area or California. Instead, every game will be available on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass, and some league matches will also be televised on broadcast TV.
The only national television game for the Earthquakes is a road match against the Galaxy on May 14.
On October 21, they will host Austin FC for their final home game of the year.
